How to Help a Friend Who Has Been Sexually Assaulted

Disclosing sexual assault or abuse is VERY HARD for any survivor. Whether the abuse was recent or happened in childhood, when a survivor discloses, it MUST be taken seriously. There must have been something within your relationship to have the survivor choose you to disclose to. Please take this trust they have in you and help them navigate.

Resources to Give THEM

  • Provide the number to the National Sexual Assault Hotline
  • Provide the number to their local Rape Crisis Center (Illinois)
  • Explain it is THEIR CHOICE to report to the local police or not
